On September 4th 2017 the Volunteers at Classic Flyers were proud to be the recipient of a Trustpower Community Award in the Heritage and Environment category.
This award recognises all the hard work and dedication put in by our band of volunteers that make Classic Flyers what it is today.
The awards ceremony was attended by Amy Scott (representing Classic Flyers management) and Peter Layne representing the many volunteers in our organisation. Between them they accepted the award on behalf of all the volunteers at Classic Flyers.
The awards were presented in front of local community dignitaries and representatives from the other organisations that were entered in the awards.
A transcript of the awards speech by Abbie Siely explains why Classic Flyers won the Heritage and Environment Category.
"The winner of the Heritage and Environment category is a group that is doing a first class job of preserving New Zealand's aviation history. Congratulations to Classic Flyers.
Classic Flyers brings New Zealand's aviation history to life for local and international visitors to enjoy with a combination of static exhibits, written, video and hands-on displays, personal guided tours by museum volunteers and school visit educational programmes. The also offer the unique opportunity to fly in one of their airworthy classic aircraft.
Volunteers contribute to the day to day running of operations, and lend their time to several other key projects. In the past 12 months, the team has completed the restoration of a world war two torpedo bomber and former Royal New Zealand Airforce jet to operational display status. Volunteers were instrumental in the construction and operation of a dedicated archive centre and library to process and store thousands of books and other priceless archive materials, along with the memorabilia and artefacts the group receives from the public wanting to see their family heirlooms preserved and protected.
The group successfully ran its fourth annual "Classics of the Sky" air show in January. The event attracted over 10,000 people who were treated to a fun and affordable day of entertainment. This, combined with the more that 7,000 people who visited the museum in the past year demonstrates just how far this group reaches.
Classic Flyers celebrates both local heritage and environment. The display of classic planes and associated memorabilia preserves our history, and the scenic flight they offer give people the opportunity to appreciate our beautiful city and surrounding area from the air.
Thank you for keeping his truly fascinating piece of our history alive for this and future generations to enjoy, and reminding us what a beautiful part of the country we get to call home."
Well done all the volunteers at Classic Flyers this award is for all of you. Remember we would not be the success that we are without the help and support from each and everyone of you.
