Model Competition
Hey Kids and Kids at Heart! Combining fun with manual skills is the essence of all sport. Classic Flyers, Tauranga’s high-flying aviation complex, is inviting budding young pilots and skilled model builders alike to participate in their model competition again this year.
This competition is a low cost way for families to sample model aircraft building as a hobby, with the possible benefit of a $250 value flight in a classic aircraft for every class winner.
There are flying competitions for gliders and rubber powered models and static competitions involving the construction and finishing of one of two types of plastic scale model. The basic kits for these competitions are available at $10 each from Classic Flyers on Jean Batten Drive, although quantities are limited, so be in quick.
Participants can also enter an ‘open class’ for any aircraft of the entrant’s own choice; these being eligible for static exhibition only. Non contesting models are also welcome as part of the display and there is a colouring competition running concurrently for ‘Junior Pilots’ 10 yrs and younger.
Entry forms are below, and model kits are available from Classic Flyers from Saturday 30th May and entries will be displayed at the museum from the 4th to the 19th of July. The whole of Sunday the 19th will be devoted to family fun, with model flying demonstrations, the museum exhibits and plenty of café food adding up to a very entertaining day from 10am through to 4pm.
Entry Forms: 1. Entry Form for the Model Competition 2. Iroquois Colouring Form 3. Mustang Coloring Form |

From Hulk to Showpiece… our Catalina story |
|
Sunday, 08 March 2009 |
|
On the first day of August 2007 the hulk of a Catalina PBY rolled through the gates at Classic Flyers, Tauranga Airport to begin a restoration that has progressed to become an elevated showpiece inside the Classic Flyers hanger. The Catalina hull was originally imported as a source for spares by the Catalina Group of NZ in the year 2000, being stripped of items for possible future use in the Group’s operational Canso Catalina. Following removal of parts the hull became a hulk, resting in the long grass at Ardmore for over six years. An enthusiastic volunteer team has devoted hundreds of hours to bring the exterior of the aircraft hull to showpiece standard, adopting US Navy WW2 colours that stand out in the museum interior. The tail section, wings and engines will not be recreated, as a complete aircraft of Catalina size would not fit into the museum! Solid work has also gone into restoring the hull interior; a process that will be completed when an access stairway is installed at the rear of the hull. This will eventually allow public access into what will accurately depict an operational maritime patrol aircraft from the World War 2 Pacific Theatre. The complete hull was raised onto its stand on Saturday 7 March, a further milestone in the rapid expansion of the Classic Flyers NZ.Com complex at Tauranga Airport, New Zealand. Be sure to keep Waitangi weekend, 2010, free for the biggest air show ever seen in Tauranga! Planning is in the early stages but we promise it will be the most interesting Wings and Wheels show you've seen here and maybe elsewhere in New Zealand. Old cars and new will join classic and modern aircraft and the oomph of military displays to make this a day to remember. |
